The Teardrop

I never thought that this would happen -

That I could be living as me.

I feel like a child pretending.

It's water that's holding us up, embraced

By the arms not of an angel

Not of anything creaturely or small

We are in a womb and we aren't aware

That this is the first stage, unfinished

Ungrown, undeveloped, beautiful potential.

We can't despise our limitations

But we can despise our smugness,

Arrogance, self-assuredness,

Thinking that we have the capacity

For understanding all

But the reality is embracing us.

We don't see past the immediate.

We don't dream for lack of rest.

Always running, working, reading, consuming.

Not taking breaths,

Not tilting our heads,

Not lying down to study the heights of the clouds,

Not considering the depths of the sea,

Not seeing you as I or us as we.
